LÊ RÊ LÊ RÊ… VIDA DE CREW É DIFICIL!!! --- CREW'S LIFE IS SO HARD!!!

Vitão (Brasil) padeiro ajudando durante o jantar

Vitão (Brazil) Baker helping at dinner

I wrote this post during my holidays between the 1st and 2nd contract, both on the Island Escape and as a waiter. Currently I have some more notions about other positions but to preserve the spirit and words of that time, on this blog reorganization I will change only the wrong typing and language mistakes that I find. Some data such as salaries are specific to the Island Cruises and there may be variations according to the Cia. Today the market reality that selects candidates here in Brazil is very different and there are several agencies, many preparatory courses and schools that offer the required maritime safety course, I released some of these links on the bar side of the blog, but as soon as on that I have no connection with them. Basic information and curiosities of crew life are here and might help many candidates in deciding to try this job.

E ai galera, blz??? Tomara q sim…
What's up folks? I hope you are ok...

The holidays are going well, thank you, I'm having time for taking rest, walk around, dating and to eat lots of mom's food. It is being difficult to meet all my friends and probably I will back to the ship without seeing some of them. At the first moment I really miss the ship but now it will now be very difficult for me to leave the people here to come back. But, c'mon ... the time to get back is coming ...

When I meet some people the ask me "how was the trip?". For some people it doesn't seems like I was working and a lot, on a ship. Based on this and and for the people who check on here to get a sense of how crew's life is I wrote this post. And also to answer some questions from some new cyber friends.

A Work at Sea é a agencia pela qual eu fui recrutado para o Island Escape.

SELECTION
I know two agencies in Santos (Brazil) recruiting for many cruise lines. I've heard about one in Rio de Janeiro and another in Parana, but I have no references. The "Work at Sea" is the agency for which I was recruited for the Island Escape. For me it was okay but some people complained of some of their services. I sent a resume and one month later I was aboard. Infinity is another agency where I went through an interview far the bar and / or restaurant, but I was called first by Island Cruises.

In both you will go through an interview in Portuguese and English on the knowledge of the work for which you applied. If approved there will be another interview with a representative of the Cia for which you were sent.

You will be charged an agency fee and a preparatory life on board course which today would be around $ 100.00.

IF YOU ARE APPROVED
You will have to take the Maritime Security Training (SCTW). Who does is Zorovich and Maranhão, in Santos. The duration is one week (morning and afternoon). The certificate is valid worldwide and required for all air companies. I think the value is around $ 250.00. If you are from out of town will have also the costs for hotel and food while taking the course.

You will also have to present a series of medical tests and anti doping (drug test). This year using the establishments that Work at Sea has agreements I'm spending about $ 3000.00. In thethe CIA that I am working and some others also embarking in Brazil is cheaper than if you do so in another country. For the first contract you will have to afford the ticket flight costs to the destination. If you finish the contract in Europe the return ticket is paid by the CIA but if you giving up before the end of contract you will have to pay the ticket.

A disciplina no navio é semi militar.

WORKING HOURS AND DISCIPLINE
For most functions working hours varies from 10 up to 13 hours daily. For some departments there is a weekly time off (for example: today some people doesn't have to work during the lunch time) but we work every day, even in the "off days".

The discipline on the ship is almost military. The first day you will be "bombarded" with several disciplinary rules and safety of the ship. Time on the ship is as holy as Jesus Christ to the Catholics and in case of delay you can expect at least a great speech.

- sim, é muito cansativo, vai ter dias que você sairá do serviço direto para cama;
- sim, em alguns momentos nos sentimos só e com muitas saudades de casa, amigos e familiares;
- sim, alguns chefes não são gentis e exigem muito de nós, principalmente no início do contrato;
- sim, as vezes é muuuuuuuuuuuuito estressante;
- sim, as vezes você não vai conseguir descer do navio por causa de escala, treinamento ou cansaço;
- sim, a comida da sua mãe vai fazer muita falta. Haverá dias que você simplesmente não vai querer comer nada do refeitório, pois não irá agüentar ver mais nada daquilo. A comida não é a mesma todo dia, mas repete muito e nem tudo é agradável ao nosso paladar;
- sim, você vai ficar perdido nos primeiros dias, mas com certeza vai haver muita gente legal querendo auxiliar, só depende de você;
- sim, a falta de privacidade é grande. Você terá que dividir cabine com alguém que pode não ser a(s) pessoa(s) mais legal ou com muitos hábitos diferentes dos seus;
- sim, as vezes o navio balança. Se você não estiver passando mal, pode até sentir medo;
- sim, você é independente, mas terá de administrar a si próprio: comida, uniforme, roupa, dinheiro, emoções, limpeza, horários, sono, saúde, stresses… No navio muitas pessoas podem e irão lhe ajudar, mas na maior parte do tempo “você depende somente de VOCÊ”;
- sim, existe muita competitividade dentro dos departamentos. Apesar de algumas pessoas virem trabalhar em busca de experiência e para viajar, muitas outras necessitam desse emprego e ajudam no sustento da família;

TO AVOID BAD SURPRISES
I've said some of these things before, but it is worth mentioning again:
- Yes, it is very tiring and some days you will finish the duty and go straight to bed;
- Yes, sometimes we feel lonely and miss home, friends and family,
- Yes, some bosses are not very kind and require much of us, especially in the beginning of the contract;
- Yes, sometimes it's "veeeery" stressful;
- Yes, sometimes you will not get off the ship because of training schedule or for being very tired;
- Yes, your mother's food will be greatly missed. There will be days that you simply will not want to eat anything from the crew mess because you just can not tolerate any food in there. The food is not the same every day but it repeats a lot during the contract and it is not everything tasteful for us;
- Yes, you will get lost during the first days but you find a lot of nice people wanting to help, it just depends on you get along with them;
- Yes, the lack of privacy is huge. You will have to share the cabin with someone who can not be the cooler person(s) or even will have to live with someone that has many different habits;
- Yes, sometimes the ship rocks and If you are not sick, you might even feel fear;
- Yes, you are totaly independent but will have to manage yourself: food, uniforms, clothes, money, emotions, cabin cleaning schedules, sleep, health, stresses ... On the ship a lot of people can and will help you, but most of the time "you depends only on you";
- Yes, there is some competition within the departments. Although some people come on board searching for travel and work experience, but many others really need this job and help to support their family;
- Not, work on a ship is not to an "student exchange" experiência. You did not come here to travel or to have passenger privileges.

WOMEN: for those who often have TPM crises, please try something to calm it before boarding...  On the ship these effects tend to be stressed, I've already saw some crazy situations...

PARA NÃO DIZER QUE NÃO FALEI DAS FLORES
- sim, da para conhecer vários lugares fascinantes;
- sim, você irá conhecer muitas pessoas legais, algumas chatas é verdade. E provavelmente fará amigos pro resto da vida;
- sim, o dinheiro é bom se comparado com as mesmas funções no Brasil; se souber economizar pode juntar uma boa “grana”;
- sim, tem festa, beijo na boca e diversão; Nem todo dia é dia de festa, mas algumas crew partys e festas de cabine são inesquecíveis;
- sim, você irá aprender muito sobre outras culturas diariamente;
- sim, dá para praticar inglês;
- sim, para quem quer trabalhar com hotelaria é uma boa experiência;

“Se você não tem cultura: leia e se instrua;
Se você não tem corpão: malhe;

Uhhhahahahahahahha, bjs!!!
(No navio bom humor é F U N D A M E N T A L !)

BUT THERE IS GOOD SURPRISES WAITING FOR:
- Yes, you will have the chance to meet many fascinating places;
- Yes, you will meet many nice people and some boring also. But probably will make friends for life;
- Yes, the money is good compared with the same functions in Brazil, if you know how to control yourself you can save some good "money";
- Yes, there is party, kissing on the mouth and entertainment; Not every day is day of celebration but some cabin party and crew party are unforgettable;
- Yes, you will learn a lot about other cultures, in a daily bases;
- Yes, you will have the chance to practice English;
- Yes, for those who want to work in a hotel environment it is a very good experience;
.- IT IS NOT WORTH GIVING UP, if you decide to boarding you should  go until the END of your contract. There is a Brazilian song that says something like that "Come, let's go, to know is not waiting for... who knows create the time and does not expect it to happen !!!".

As a "friend of mine and Aline" says:
"If you do not have culture: read it and get instructed;
If you do not have a great body: work it out;
Now if you are not FUNNY, stay at home!!!".

LOL, XXX!
